Champions League Match Day One preview
The 2018/19 Champions League group stage kicks off on Tuesday 18 September, with the competition looking tougher to win than ever.
Manchester City, Barcelona, Juventus, PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid will all be targeting the lifting of the European Cup in May, while Manchester United and Tottenham aren’t there to make up the numbers either.
Only one team can win the competition each season and Manchester City are currently 5.50 favourites with bet365, with the same bookmaker going 1.16 about Pep Guardiola’s side enjoying a winning start to this tournament by beating Lyon.
That might seem a short price but will be surely featuring in thousands of accumulator bets, while the same applies to the 1.36 about Real Madrid beating a Roma side who made the semi-final stage of the Champions League last season.
Real are bidding to win a fourth successive European title, something that would be a truly incredible feat although Julen Lopetegui will feel as though Gareth Bale can propel this team to new heights.
Roma are 7.00 to win at the Bernabeu and might hope to catch their opponents cold, with the team having fared so well last term and they did knock Barcelona out.
Also on Wednesday, Manchester United are in action for the first time, with the Red Devils clashing with Young Boys in Switzerland.
Jose Mourinho would dearly love to silence his critics by winning this competition and he does have previous after triumphing with Porto and Inter Milan.
United are 1.70 with bet365 to get three points against a team who won the Swiss League at a canter last term and will be out to land an early scalp to give themselves the maximum chance of qualifying.
Barcelona are the shortest priced team to win on Tuesday, with the Catalan side available at 1.10 to beat PSV, with Inter against Tottenham looking like a more open and competitive battle.
Inter are a welcome team to come back in the Champions League and they’re 2.60 favourites to get over the line with a victory against a Spurs side who didn’t sign anyone new in the summer.
Tottenham still pack a punch and fared well in the group stage last term when taking four points from eventual winners Real Madrid, with the visitors priced at 2.75 to win this particular clash.
Meanwhile the match of the week probably takes place at Anfield, with Liverpool priced at 2.14 to beat Paris Saint Germain and make a positive start to life in the Champions League.
The French champions are a 3.00 poke with bet365 to get the better of their English opponents and they’ll face Liverpool immediately after that clash at Wembley against Tottenham.
