Nigeria v Burundi Betting Tips
Burundi have qualified for the 2019 African Nations Cup for the first time in their history, with the Swallows now heading to Egypt as rank outsiders and they’ve been handed a tough opener against an established force in this tournament.
Stoke City’s Saido Berahino is the most recognisable name in the squad, although Vipers central defender Karim Nizigiyimana is a reassuring presence at the back for Burundi, while Fiston Abdul Razak averages a goal every two games for his country.
Burundi were also unbeaten during qualifying, winning two and drawing four of their games against Mali, Gabon and South Sudan. Drawing home and away against Gabon and Mali was enough to qualify and there were just five goals conceded during the campaign.
Nigeria might feel as though it’s their time to get things right on the African Nations Cup stage, with the Super Eagles having been unlucky not to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup.
They played well when losing 2-1 to England a year ago and beat Iceland at the World Cup before narrowly exiting the competition at the hands of an Argentina side who were heavily reliant on Lionel Messi.
However, Gernot Rohr’s side haven’t lost a match since then, finishing top of their qualifying section and averaging more than two goals per game, with Odion Ighalo scoring seven times.
Ighalo previously operated for Watford and now plays his club football for Chinese team Shanghai Shenhua, while there is plenty of steel in the midfield department thanks to the presence of Alex Iwobi, Peter Etebo and Wilfried Ndidi.
Nigeria look a reasonable price at 8/1 on the outright market and we’re certainly backing them to enjoy a winning start in this tournament. However, they are liable to let in the odd goal and we’ll back them to win with both teams finding the net in this one.
