Manchester City are the champions of England and it’s little surprise to see Pep Guardiola’s side trading as strong favourites to win the 2019 Premier League Asia Trophy.

While Guardiola won’t be particularly bothered about lifting this piece of silverware in China, he will be keen to see plenty of desire from the team selected for the clash against West Ham on 17 July.

There are clearly a number of key squad members who won’t be available for this encounter. Riyad Mahrez is busy captaining Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and won’t be seen in a Manchester City shirt for weeks, while Ederson, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Fernandinho and Danilo are all having an extended break after their Copa America participation.

It doesn’t mean that City are short of options and there are plenty of players who can be shining lights in this encounter, with Raheem Sterling tipped to continue his meteoric rise at the Etihad Stadium, while this match might also provide a stage for Leroy Sane and Kevin de Bruyne to shine.

Aymeric Laporte and John Stones could be set to start the season as the central defensive partnership, with West Ham having to deal with the imminent exit of Marko Arnautovic before looking to replace the wantaway Austrian.

Manuel Pellegrini did an excellent job in charge of the Hammers during his first season and the Chilean has acquired Pablo Fornals from Villarreal after £24 million was spent on the Spaniard.

However, the winger has not been included in the 25-man squad along with Fabian Balbuena and Arthur Masuaku, with the three players having had international commitments.

The Hammers seem a striker short at the moment although this is a first warm-up match for both teams and we can see Manchester City running out as winners with both sides finding the net.
