Man City v Newcastle Premier League betting tips
It’s time to guess the Manchester City team for Saturday’s clash against Newcastle United.
Ederson seems like a lock between the sticks and Benjamin Mendy looks like a cast-iron selection given his propensity to bomb forward and zap in crosses along with his defensive capabilities.
However, the remainder of the team’s positions seem up for grabs and Pep Guardiola caused a surprise ahead of City’s previous home match against Huddersfield when leaving Kyle Walker and Raheem Sterling out of the team.
It’s possible that Vincent Kompany might drop to the bench for this encounter, with the Belgian looking out of sorts during a 1-1 draw at Molineux and we know Guardiola is ready to dispense with any player who isn’t making the grade.
Aymeric Laporte might be partnered by John Stones, while there could be a starting berth for Riyad Mahrez or Leroy Sane, both of whom have been used sparingly but would be motivated to prove their worth against Newcastle.
It’s clear that the Magpies will offer a stubborn resistance and will hope to have Jamaal Lascelles back in central defence after the player mysteriously missed the 2-1 reverse at the hands of Chelsea.
Rafael Benitez is unapologetic about the tactics employed in these type of games and United will be happy to let City have the ball and hope to block them off when it comes to creating scoring chances.
Stopping City from scoring in a home game is probably akin to Chinese algebra when it comes to a difficulty rating and we’re leaning towards a bet which is against Newcastle scoring instead.
While the Magpies did manage to find the net against Chelsea in their last match, they failed to score at Cardiff and will offer little going forward that can’t be cut out by Fernandinho or Ilkay Gundogan.
City are massive odds-on to win the match but much bigger if you back them to win to nil and it’s plausible that Newcastle won’t get a shot on target in this clash, even if they managed to score in the same fixture last term.
