Roma punched well above their weight in European competition last season to reach the semi-final stage and their 3-0 win over Barcelona at the Stadio Olimpico was one of the abiding memories of the Champions League.

The Serie A side came from 4-1 down in the first leg to overcome the champions of Spain, with Eusebio di Francesco’s side back on Spanish soil this week as they lock horns with a Real Madrid side missing an obvious player.

For the first time in ten years, Cristiano Ronaldo will not be representing Los Merengues and Real also have a new manager at the helm this term, with Julen Lopetegui in charge after Zinedine Zidane decided to call time on his highly successful reign at the club.

Real have begun with three La Liga wins as you might expect, although they were beaten by Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup after extra-time, with the former conceding four goals in 120 minutes.

Indeed, keeping clean sheets currently appears to be a problem after shipping against Girona and Leganes, although 4-1 victories against both teams illustrates that the attacking venom is still in evidence.

Gareth Bale is now the main man at the Bernabeu and he’s determined to fill that Ronaldo-sized hole, with Thibaut Courtois the expensive arrival from Chelsea who is now the number one choice with the Spanish club.

It’s a squad which isn’t radically different to the one that won the competition last season and we’re expecting this team to make waves again, with promising Spaniards Dani Ceballos and Marco Asensio also part of things.
