What is a snake draft in fantasy football?

You’re bound to have plenty of questions when you first consider putting together a team, starting with, ‘what is fantasy football?’ before moving on to the nuts and bolts of gameplay. But first you have to pick your players, which is where the draft comes into play.

There are two main ways of creating your team, known as the snake draft and the auction draft - which is sometimes referred to as a salary cap draft.

As the name suggests, in an auction draft you’ll be bidding for players using a set budget, but there’s a very different procedure for the snake draft. This process requires each manager to take turns in picking team members, starting at the top of the list and working down. When every manager has made their choice, the second pick starts from the bottom of the list and works its way back up again. This snaking movement up and down the list of managers is responsible for the name - it really is as simple as that!
