If you are new to fantasy sports, you may not be familiar with fantasy football, but not to worry, because fantasy sports are pretty straightforward. You simply draft a list of players and earn points based on their performance.
In this guide, I answer the question, "What is fantasy football?" and further discuss how you can participate in various fantasy football leagues and contests. Football is one of America's most popular sports, and a chance to compete with peers in drafting a winning adds fun and sophistication to the sport.

A quick overview of fantasy football
Fantasy football is a strategy-based game where you create a team of NFL players and earn points based on real-life performance. If playing weekly fantasy football, you select players every week to "start" in various positions: quarterback (QB), running backs (RB), wide receivers (WR), kicker (K), tight End (TE), a defense (D/ST), and a FLEX (often an RB or WR, sometimes a TE or QB).
Your players' on-field stats (touchdowns, yards, etc.) add to your weekly score. If your score exceeds your opponent's, you win that week. Players not in your starting lineup are technically on your "bench," and their points don't count towards your total score. The fantasy regular season ends in Week 14 or 15, followed by playoffs for the top teams. The league champion is decided in the final games, often ending in the "Super Bowl" in Week 17. That said, the rules may vary, so it's good always to check your league's terms and conditions.
Tools to use and which DFS platform to pick
There are several tools you can use to enhance your DFS football strategy. One is the DFS lineup optimizer, which suggests the best player lineups for the day or week. Another tool is the DFS ownership projections platform, which gives you an overview of which athletes are likely to be selected by most participants and which players are not as popular. These tools are not a replacement for your strategy; they should complement your research.
Regarding the choice of DFS platforms, there are many great options. As noted in this FanDuel daily fantasy review, the site's reputation is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a DFS platform. A majority of the most trusted platforms will offer a wide range of contests, generous bonuses, loyalty programs, and even support multiple payment methods.

Football DFS vs season-long fantasy football leagues
Fantasy football can be grouped into three categories based on the contest's length. For instance, there is the season-long fantasy football league, where participants draft a team that lasts the entire season. Then, there is the daily fantasy football, where participants draft a team and join daily contests. The last and most popular fantasy football category is the contest that takes place over a week or weekend.
For beginners, it is advisable to join the daily or weekly contest so you can learn on the go. In a recent DraftKings daily fantasy review, I noted that daily fantasy sports offer several benefits since they provide quicker results and more opportunities to refine your strategies. Below is a quick comparison of the football DFS vs season-long football leagues.
| Feature | Season-long Fantasy Football | Football DFS |
|---|---|---|
| Drafting period | Once per season | Daily or weekly |
| Team Management | Same team throughout the season | New team in each contest |
| Payouts | End of season | After each contest |
| Community engagement | High interaction with friends and peers | Less interaction due to the shorter commitment |
| Learning curve | Slow. Ideal for seasoned DFS participants | Quick. Ideal for beginners and season players |
Pros and cons of fantasy football
Now that you know what DFS football is and how to participate, here are some of its pros and cons:
Pros & Cons
- Fosters a sense of community
- Participants can win big prizes
- Increases interest in NFL games
- High emotional investment
What is Fantasy Football: Key Takeaways
Knowing what fantasy football is and actually drafting a team to compete in a contest are two different things. If you are to outscore opponents in your league, it is crucial to select a balanced lineup comprising star players, mid-level players, and value picks. You must also carefully manage your team and adjust your strategy based on real-time updates.
