Arsenal’s best chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League might be through this Europa League route, with the winner of the competition getting to dine at Europe’s top table next season.

The Gunners currently look unlikely to make the top four of the Premier League, although they can make heady progress on Thursday nights, with BATE standing between Unai Emery’s side and a place in the last sixteen.

Emery has previously played a weakened side in this competition although we might expect several first-team players to make the trip to Belarus, with the Spaniard having already triumphed several times in this competition.

The 47-year-old has won the Europa League on three occasions with Sevilla and that was a similar squad of players to the one he has largely inherited at the Emirates, with that lethal cutting edge provided by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Denis Suarez could be an important player in Europe for Arsenal and recently arrived on loan from Barcelona, with Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil also likely to feature in this encounter.

BATE qualified from the Europa League group stage by finishing second behind Chelsea, with Borisov having won three and drawn three to finish in the runner-up slot and they managed to score nine goals in their six games.

Realistically, the home side need to go on the front foot in the first leg to stand any chance of making it through and we shouldn’t be surprised to see them find the net.

BATE scored in five of their six group games and they are the outstanding team in their own country, with a passionate home crowd urging them on against a Gunners side who have often shown a weak underbelly defensively.

However, the teams are a class apart and we should expect Arsenal to outscore their opponents over the course of the ninety minutes.
