EFL Cup second round betting preview – 28/29 August
We have a huge programme of midweek EFL Cup fixtures taking place, with the vast majority of Premier League teams joining the competition at the second round stage.
There are twenty-one matches being played on Tuesday 28 August, with AFC Wimbledon hosting West Ham and hoping to pull off a shock against a team who have started the season slowly.
The League One outfit are 4.75 (15/4) with bet365 to claim a Premier League scalp and the visitors are likely to field a weakened team for this clash, although the Hammers are 1.75 (3/4) favourites to get the job done.
Swansea meet Crystal Palace at the Liberty Stadium and the Eagles are 2.20 (6/5) to beat a team who were relegated from the top flight last term, with the Swans trading at 3.30 (23/10) although their focus is on Championship matters.
There is an all-Premier League clash at the AMEX Stadium where Brighton host Southampton and the Seagulls’ strong home form means that Chris Hughton’s side could merit a bet at 2.10 (11/10).
However, there could be a scalp of sorts at the City Ground on Tuesday night where Nottingham Forest host Newcastle United and the Tricky Trees are actually 2.37 (11/8) with bet365 to beat the Magpies, with Rafael Benitez’s available at 2.87 (15/8).
There are several other Championship clubs hosting Premier League opposition and that includes Reading going up against Watford in a local derby of sorts. The Hornets now have a sizeable squad and bet365 go 2.20 (6/5) that they win at the Madejski Stadium.
Sheffield Wednesday clash with Wolves at Hillsborough and this might be a competition that the visitors don’t care about this season in their quest for Premier League survival. The Owls are 3.75 (11/4) for what wouldn’t be a surprise victory.
Stoke City have had a sluggish start to the season although the Potters are 2.25 (5/4) favourites to beat Huddersfield and the visitors will possibly rest their entire first team considering that this competition serves as an unnecessary distraction.
Joey Barton has started well at League One Fleetwood and he gets a chance to test himself against a Premier League team, with Leicester City hosting the Cod Army.
The two teams met in the FA Cup last season and you can back the visitors at 12.00 (11/1) with bet365 to win this game which looks a lumpy price considering that shocks are often likely.
Norwich are another team that could beat Premier League opponents and odds of 5.00 (4/1) seem too big about the Canaries winning away to Cardiff City, with Neil Warnock looking ahead to his team’s next top flight fixture instead.
Everton could make progress at the expense of Rotherham and look a solid enough multiple pick at 1.28, although Fulham look a touch on the short side at 1.40 considering they are meeting an Exeter side who have started their League Two campaign very well. The Grecians are 7.00 (6/1) to pull off a shock at Craven Cottage.
