World Cup 2018 Group D Betting Preview
Will Argentina go one better than the 2014 World Cup?
The odds on ARGENTINA winning World Cup 2018 Group D range between 1.44 and 1.67, with some bookmakers running scared of La Albiceleste who are likely to feature in many group accumulators.
Lionel Messi is someone who can carry this team a long way in the competition, although it’s worth noting that CONMEBOL qualification to reach Russia was not without its hiccups, with the Argentineans finishing just two points ahead of a Chile team that failed to qualify.
Argentina look typically top-heavy for the World Cup. Messi is joined by Angel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala, although they still only managed to score nineteen goals in eighteen qualifying matches.
Croatia have a World Cup-winning midfield
Perhaps Jorge Sampaoli will find the winning blend in Russia although CROATIA look like a force to be reckoned with and they easily overcame Greece in the play-offs to book their place in the tournament.
The Croatians were probably the best team at the 2016 European Championships and were cruelly defeated by a Portugal side happy to soak up pressure from a talented group of players.
The midfield is especially brilliant, with Luka Modric joined by Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic and the trio are capable of propelling this experienced group of players a long way in the 2018 World Cup.
Mario Mandzukic remains a handful in attack, while the team have quality defenders in the form of Šime Vrsaljko, Ivan Strinić, Matej Mitrović and Dejan Lovren.
Iceland feature at their first World Cup
Croatia were in pole position to qualify as UEFA group winners before stumbling and letting ICELAND steal top spot, with the two European nations now meeting in Group D which means we should consider their head-to-head during qualifying.
In Rekyjavik, the Icelanders managed a 1-0 win although they lost 2-0 in Zagreb and one wonders whether Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side can repeat their heroics at Euro 2016 where they reached the last eight of the competition.
While Gylfi Sigurdsson is a talented playmaker, this team are very much about the collective effort, with their steely mentality helping them through a tough Euro 2016 qualifying group and then overcoming England after falling behind.
NIGERIA are one of five African teams in the 2018 World Cup, with four wins and two draws seeing the Super Eagles go through ahead of Zambia, Cameroon and a woeful Algeria team.
The Nigerians made the last sixteen stage four years ago although that was an easier group which saw them finish ahead of Bosnia and Iran. This time around, they might have their work cut out and don’t look to be blessed with the quality players who can make a difference.
