Man City v Burton Albion EFL Cup betting preview and tips
Manchester City have effectively been handed a place in the EFL Cup final after being drawn against Burton Albion in the semi-final, with Pep Guardiola scarcely able to believe his luck that his side are playing League One opponents at this stage of the competition.
Take nothing away from the fact that the Brewers have overcome Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Burnley to reach the last four against all the odds, although we are talking about a mid-table team in the third tier of English professional football.
Guardiola might make massive changes for this clash although the second string are fairly strong when you consider we’re likely to see Phil Foden, Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones on the pitch, while Gabriel Jesus is also likely to be involved.
These are all players accustomed to helping City challenge for a Premier League title and will want to help their team get the job done before the return leg at the Pirelli Stadium a few weeks later.
It’s interesting to note that Burton have been fairly poor on the road in their own division this season and experience problems when it comes to finding the net, with blanks recently drawn against Bristol Rovers, Luton, Fleetwood and Blackpool.
They did score a winner at the Riverside although this match will be all about being defensively solid and looking to limit the number of clear scoring chances that fall the way of a team that drew at Leicester in the previous round before going through on penalties.
While backing Manchester City at 1.10 isn’t going to make you rich, we can get excited about the much bigger price about a win for the champions of England without conceding a goal.
It’s difficult to envisage Burton making too many forays into the opposition half, let alone carving out chances and we can see Guardiola making some strong substitutions in the second half to make sure that the team enjoy a victory by a clear margin, thus allowing the second leg clash to be played out without a fuss.
