Middlesbrough v Burton Albion EFL Cup betting preview and tips
Tony Pulis must have allowed himself a little chuckle when the EFL Cup draw was made and his Middlesbrough team somehow managed to avoid a swathe of Premier League sides to instead by paired with Burton Albion.
Pulis is single-mindedly focused on steering Boro to the Premier League this season and they sit sixth in the table after a pretty decent first twenty-one matches which sees them in the promotion mix.
However, Notts County, Rochdale, Preston and Crystal Palace have been defeated to see the Teeside club into the last eight and they are heavy favourites to overcome a team who were relegated from the second tier last season.
Nigel Clough continues to plough forward with the Brewers and they sit mid-table in League One this season which is pretty much where they should be placed given their respective resources and stature as a club.
From the perspective of Albion, this is a fantastic opportunity to make the semi-final stage of the EFL Cup and they did overcome Nottingham Forest in the previous round of the competition when triumphing 3-2.
Clough will want his team to have a crack at the Riverside Stadium but four defeats in the past six games doesn’t suggest they’re in the greatest of form and this could be a backs against the wall job.
It’s little surprise to see that Middlesbrough don’t really concede too many in front of their own supporters, with seven shipped in eleven games against much tougher opponents than Burton and we can expect them to run a tight ship here.
Aden Flint is one of the division’s best central defenders, with he and Daniel Ayala managing to keep Blackburn at bay recently despite the team reduced to ten men for the majority of the match and we could see Britt Assombalonga back in the team for this one.
