Newport County v Middlesbrough FA Cup betting preview and tips
Newport County have had a brilliant run in the FA Cup, with Michael Flynn’s team having begun their campaign with a 2-0 win away to Met Police before overcoming Wrexham after an initial goalless draw at the Racecourse.
The Welsh side then claimed the scalp of Leicester City before scoring a late equaliser at the Riverside Stadium and they won’t be easily beaten at Rodney Parade in the replay, with Newport’s home form in League Two fairly strong.
County have won eight and drawn four of their fourteen home matches in the fourth tier this season and will clash with a Middlesbrough side who have won six of their fourteen matches on the road in the Championship this season.
It’s no surprise that Tony Pulis’ side tend to run a tight ship on their travels and they have conceded just eleven goals on the road this term which is less than any other team in the division.
The approach is likely to be a fairly defensive one, with seven of Boro’s last nine matches featuring two goals or less. One of the games to buck the trend was a 5-0 spanking of Peterborough in the previous round of the competition.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that Middlesbrough are challenging for promotion to the Premier League, with this match sandwiched between tough matches against West Brom and Leeds. Pulis will surely be prioritising the bread and butter of the league rather than the FA Cup.
Therefore, we could see a tight encounter and Newport will certainly look to cling on to any slender advantage that they manage to generate, with Middlesbrough similarly likely to be stingy if they are able to go into the lead.
