Tranmere v Tottenham FA Cup betting preview and tips
Tranmere have negotiated replays against Oxford City and Southport to reach the third round of the FA Cup and Rovers’ reward has been a money-spinning third round tie against Tottenham Hotspur.
Prenton Park is sure to be full to the rafters for this BT Sport-televised encounter, with Micky Mellon hoping to pit his wits against Mauricio Pochettino, although it was quite telling that the Argentine recently mentioned that his team were going to compete hard across four competitions.
It’s looking increasingly likely that Spurs will win at least one trophy this season and we can expect a strong team to be fielded for the team’s return to Merseyside after recently thrashing Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park which saw the London side leading 3-1 at the break.
If they’re able to establish such a big advantage against a mid-table Premier League side, then we should expect Tottenham to prove far too strong for their League Two opponents, even if Tranmere do boast a solid home record this season.
Rovers have only just returned to the Football League after a three-year hiatus in the National League, with Mellon hoping to retain the services of the division’s top scorer James Norwood who is capable of causing problems for the Spurs defence.
However, this is a team finding their feet at League Two level at the moment and they are likely to be outclassed by a side who can call upon players such as Harry Winks, Lucas Moura and Moussa Sissoko to deliver a professional job even if some of the leading lights are given the night off.
Prenton Park is more of a Championship-style ground than somewhere that Premier League sides fear visiting, with Pochettino wanting to avoid any sort of silliness that comes with an FA Cup replay considering that a Premier League title tilt could be on the cards.
