Newport County v Tranmere Betting Tips
At the start of the season, you might not have had Tranmere or Newport pegged as promotion contenders, although one of these teams will be operating in League One next season after reaching the play-off final.
Tranmere are slight favourites to triumph at Wembley after overcoming Forest Green over two legs, with Mickey Mellon’s team winning 1-0 at Prenton Park before a 1-1 draw at The New Lawn.
Rovers boast the division’s leading scorer and it was James Norwood who scored a wonderful volley at FGR to essentially help the Wirral side to a third Wembley trip in the space of three seasons.
The national stadium is becoming a familiar hunting ground for a team who lost the National League play-off final there in 2017 before returning to defeat Boreham Wood twelve months later and regain their Football League status.
Consolidation appeared to be on the cards this term although a wonderful winning run during the spring catapulted Tranmere into the promotion picture, helped by the acquisition of David Perkins who is now part of a two-man hunting team with Jay Harris.
As for Newport, they are twelve games unbeaten coming into this play-off final and that includes two matches against Mansfield which saw County draw 1-1 at Rodney Parade before a goalless draw at Field Mill, leading to a victorious penalty shootout win.
Michael Flynn’s side sneaked into the play-offs on the final day of the regular season, although they have taken four points off Tranmere this season after a 1-0 win at Prenton Park was followed by a goalless draw in Wales.
Ultimately, there’s not a great deal between these teams and we shouldn’t ignore the cup exploits of Newport which illustrates they have the steeliness required for the big occasion.
The best route is probably to go for a low-scoring clash. Whichever team takes the lead looks adept at managing the game, especially Tranmere who were excellent in the second leg at Forest Green in terms of keeping the ball and seeing the game out pretty comfortably.
