Can we be confident of backing Liverpool to win Sunday’s Merseyside derby? While the Reds have won nine times away from home in the Premier League this season, they have failed to win on five occasions.

There was the defeat at the Etihad Stadium and there have also been draws against Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and Manchester United. The last two matches occurred in back to back games on the road, with Liverpool not firing at the moment.

Supporters are clearly concerned about recent performances and the prospect of them winning the Premier League title looks to be a remote one, with Jurgen Klopp’s side in danger of falling short.

Part of the problem is that Liverpool are taking a less risky approach to matches, with Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson not providing the sort of dynamism from midfield that will help the front three deliver.

Much is made of Liverpool’s famous front three although Roberto Firmino has been off-colour in recent games and appears to be carrying an injury, while Mohamed Salah appears to have blown hot and cold, while Sadio Mane was recently anonymous at Old Trafford.

Not that Everton really inspire confidence under Marco Silva this season. There were initially promising signs although the performances have dried up since losing 1-0 at Anfield where a freak goal from Divock Origi saw Liverpool nab the points.

Silva has been under pressure but appears to have time to build a successful team and his stock will rise should Everton manage to land a victory in this game, although perhaps a draw is the best outcome.

There is enough quality in the home ranks to see them land a point in the same way that Leicester, West Ham and Manchester United have done recently, with Liverpool’s goals really drying up.
