Italy v Finland Euro 2020 betting preview and tips
The Stadio Friuli in Udine plays host to Italy’s opening Euro 2020 qualifier, with many Udinese supporters getting the opportunity to watch a new-look Azzurri in action against a Finnish side who might not be complete pushovers.
Italy famously missed out on the 2018 World Cup after losing in a play-off against Sweden, although Roberto Mancini has restored some pride in the national shirt and the team acquitted themselves well in the Nations League.
The Italians started the campaign badly after a home draw with Poland and a defeat in Portugal, although a win in Poland followed by a draw against the Portuguese saw them avoid relegation and remain in the Nations League Group A.
Indeed, they come into this qualifier off the back of an unbeaten four-match run and they have also kept three consecutive clean sheets against Poland, the USA and Portugal along the way.
Mancini is renowned for being a defensively astute coach and it’s the Italian way to build from the back, with the manager being able to retain the services of Giorgio Chiellini who captains the team and marshals the defence quite brilliantly.
The squad are packed with quality players who generally ply their trade for top Serie A clubs and there were no less than five Juventus players who were called up for the most recent friendly match against the US.
It’s hard to see Finland creating too many chances and they come into this match after losing three of their past four matches, with Greece and Hungary enjoying victories against these opponents without conceding.
The Finns will aim to be defensive against an Italian side who aren’t showing signs of scoring bundles of goals, although there is another attacking talent to ensure that the Azzurri get over the line here while keeping a clean sheet.
