Liverpool v Bayern Munich Champions League betting preview and tips
Where has it all gone wrong for Bayern Munich this season? Perhaps they have just failed to maintain that sublime form which usually has them kicking clear at the top of the Bundesliga, with Niko Kovac failing to live up to the standard of his predecessors so far.
It didn’t stop Bayern topping their Champions League group with fourteen points, although the presence of AEK Athens and Benfica made qualifying fairly easy and it was notable that they failed to beat Ajax home and away.
While Jurgen Klopp will pay the German champions plenty of respect, the plain truth is that Liverpool will be favourites to make their way into the last eight and that their manager will be delighted to have avoided Juventus and Barcelona.
Liverpool needed to beat Napoli in their final group game in order to progress, with the Merseyside team having lost all three of their away clashes during that stage including a 2-0 reverse away at Red Star Belgrade.
However, the Reds are supremely strong when it comes to matches at Anfield and they won’t mind playing the first leg on their own patch against a Bayern team who wobbled away to Ajax and conceded three goals.
They’ve also lost away to Hertha Berlin and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season, with Bayern likely to aim to keep things tight and they have been defensively stubborn for the most part this season.
Robert Lewandowski remains a sharp shooter who must be watched carefully, although Liverpool already have experience of handling Napoli and PSG at home, with the Reds vastly superior to both sides at Anfield.
Virgil van Dijk offers a masterful presence at the back, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane providing the cutting edge in attack and it might be that former Bayern star Xherdan Shaqiri is the one that supplies the killer touch.
