Man Utd v PSG Champions League betting preview and tips
Manchester United are having a seismically bad season in the Premier League although the bottom line is that Jose Mourinho has now left the club and they are in the Champions League last sixteen.
When the draw was made for the knockout phase, many onlookers suggested that Paris Saint-Germain would be scoring shedloads of goals against their English opponents, although the departure of Mourinho changes things somewhat.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now in caretaker charge until the rest of the season and the situation has echoes of when Roberto di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas at Chelsea and ended up steering the team to a Champions League triumph that looked unlikely for most of the season.
The Norwegian has clearly been appointed as the stopgap gaffer due to his bond with the club and the existing squad, although quite whether he can mastermind a European triumph that he experienced as a player remains to be seen.
United couldn’t have received a tougher draw against a PSG side that won the trickiest of groups by finishing above Napoli and Liverpool, with Thomas Tuchel’s side scoring bundles of goals and looking as though their time might have arrived.
That said, PSG were beaten at Anfield and failed to beat Napoli home and away, although they are at least playing like one of Europe’s best teams and it’s a big ask for United to live with their French opponents over the two games.
Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial will look forward to clashing against a Paris side who boast several of their fellow World Cup winning team members including the mercurial Kylian Mbappe, while Neymar and Edinson Cavani should offer a lively goalscoring threat as always.
While United are clearly going to be stronger and most focused now that Mourinho has been removed, it doesn’t mean they are well equipped to live with a PSG side who are going places under a progressive new manager.
