Shakhtar Donetsk v Man City Champions League preview and tips

Champions League
Tip: Shakhtar +1.5
Units: 1/5
Odds: -125

We’re surprised to see Manchester City trading at odds of 1.40 to win their third Champions League game of the season. While they can rightly claim to be among the best sides in Europe, it’s been a struggle for this team so far.

City were beaten 2-1 at home to Lyon in a match which saw Pep Guardiola forced to watch from the stands, while they then made heavy weather of a victory in Hoffenheim which saw the champions of England come from behind to claim a vital three points.

Perhaps the Citizens will kick on and now claim top spot in Group F, although Shakhtar did beat them in this group fixture last season and come into the game boasting an unbeaten start thanks to consecutive draws.

The Ukrainian side had to come back twice to draw with Hoffenheim although they were much better in France when racing into a 2-0 lead against Lyon only for their opponents to get back on level terms.

Paulo Fonseca’s team will very much feel that this group is up for grabs, with Shakhtar having tasted defeat just once all season and they are once again demonstrating that they are the best team in Ukraine.

Guardiola will gladly take a victory by a slender margin and that is why we like the idea of backing the home side with a +1.5 goals start. This means the bet wins even if Shakhtar lose by a single goal, while a draw or home wins also means the bet cops.

It should be noted that the home team have scored thirty goals in eleven matches domestically and that a draw wouldn’t be the worst outcome for either side ahead of their rematch at the Etihad Stadium.
