Portugal v Switzerland Nations League preview and tips
Portugal were probably the Pot 1 team that every other top nation wanted to face in the Nations League, although early wins over Italy and Poland meant that Fernando Santos’ side were able to qualify for the finals this summer.
It’s hard to dispute this team’s knack of performing well in international tournaments, having triumphed at Euro 2016 and acquitted themselves fairly well in the 2018 World Cup before being turned over by Uruguay.
Portugal will now be on home soil for this clash against the Swiss before a potential final against England or Netherlands, with their own supporters likely to give them a definite advantage in these games.
The only downside from a Portugal point-of-view is that they are likely to be missing Cristiano Ronaldo. The Juventus star didn’t play any of the Nations League group games and it appears that he’s decided to boycott the competition after a fall-out with UEFA.
Perhaps he will return for this big match on home soil, although we’re confident that the Portuguese team will be strong enough to win the match against a Switzerland side who might feel as though they’ve drawn the short straw.
The Swiss looked in good nick during the 2018 World Cup before a flimsy defeat against Sweden in the knockout stages, while Vladimir Petkovic’s side scored an astonishing fourteen goals during the group stage of the Nations League.
The remarkable clash against Belgium saw them trail 2-0 before storming back to win by a 5-2 scoreline and they are clearly dangerous opponents, although they were previously beaten in Belgium and only managed to edge their clash in Iceland.
While international football is hard to predict given that the players have featured in a long domestic season, we feel as though Portugal can benefit from home advantage and ultimately get over the line in this clash.
