Celtic v Rangers Old Firm derby betting preview and tips

13:00 Sun 31 Mar
Tip: Under 2.5 Goals
Units: 1/5
Odds: -125

While the neutrals were hoping for a genuine title race in the Scottish Premiership this season, it appears that Celtic are on their way to an eighth consecutive domestic crown, with Neil Lennon’s team ten points clear of Rangers as we enter the business end of the campaign.

Ultimately, the difference between the Hoops and their Old Firm rivals is having superb home form, with fourteen wins and a draw occurring in fifteen matches at Celtic Park and the team don’t seem adversely affected by the departure of Brendan Rodgers.

When the teams previously met at Celtic Park, the game ended in a 1-0 victory for the Scottish champions, with the Gers then getting their own back at Ibrox when enjoying a 1-0 triumph of their own.

Steven Gerrard would dearly love to engineer a follow-up victory here, although his team have been unconvincing on the road for much of the season and their away win ratio is lower than 50% which doesn’t inspire confidence for this game.

Indeed, Rangers are without a win in their previous four matches, with draws occurring at Aberdeen and Hibernian before a home reverse to the Dons in the Scottish FA Cup. That was followed by a home draw with Kilmarnock.

Rangers only concede an average of one goal per away game and we’re confident that they can keep things tight in this derby match, with both games between these sides featuring just a solitary goal so far.

We can therefore back Under 2.5 Goals with a degree of confidence, with Celtic clearly wanting to play on the front foot but knowing that a ten-point cushion means they don’t need to take chances in a match such as this one.

There will be plenty of tackles flying in and that could lead to a stop-start match, with Alfredo Moreles the top scorer in the division although he’s accumulated a whopping 17 cards this season and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s seen red by the final whistle.
