Real Madrid were unable to continue their winning start to the La Liga season away to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, with the home side taking the lead before Isco’s second half equaliser.

Los Merengues can ill afford to drop any further points at this stage of the season, with the bookies expecting them to enjoy a facile win over an Espanyol team riding high in fourth place at the moment.

Rubi’s team finished eleventh in the standings last term although they’re bidding for a much better finish this time around, with the Periquitos having drawn away to Celta Vigo and then enjoyed home wins over Valencia and Levante.

In between those victories came a 2-1 defeat away to Alaves and this is clearly their toughest assignment of the season, although they will be heartened by the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo will no longer terrorise their defence.

In addition, Real will come into this game off the back of a midweek engagement with Roma on Wednesday, with Julen Lopetegui potentially rotating his team at a busy point in the domestic season.

Casemiro and Isco were notable exclusions from the starting XI that faced Athletic, with Gareth Bale failing to score although the Welshman had managed to find the net in his previous four outings and is clearly relishing the chance to shine now that CR7 has joined Juve.

Real have won their two home games to date in fairly convincing fashion, although it’s worth noting that they don’t keep a huge amount of clean sheets at home and it could be worth looking at the home win with both teams to score.

Espanyol have found the net in all their La Liga matches to date and they’ve had five different players score for them, with Real simply happy to outscore their opponents and stay on the coat tails of Barcelona.
