PSV v Basel Betting Tips
PSV Eindhoven begin what they hope will be a big European adventure this season, with the Dutch Eredivisie team clashing with FC Basel in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
Last season, PSV made it to the group stage of Europe’s premier competition and produced some solid performances in a tough section despite finishing bottom behind Barcelona, Tottenham and Inter Milan.
Mark van Bommel’s side were also strong domestically and finished just three points behind champions Ajax, with PSV looking like a decent bet to win this first leg encounter against last year’s runner-up in the Swiss top division.
Last season’s form at the Philips Stadion was excellent and even better than that of the Dutch champions. They won sixteen of their seventeen matches and drew the other one. They also scored fifty-eight goals and conceded just seven times.
Star striker Luuk de Jong has since departed for Sevilla, although the talented Steven Bergwijn is still at the club along with the sharp-shooting Hirving Lozano.
Basel will clearly consider this to be an unfortunate draw, with the team having finished twenty points behind champions Young Boys in their domestic league last season.
Marcel Koller’s team will want to still be in the tie come the second leg and will approach this tie cautiously, knowing the excellent home form that PSV have along with their capacity to score goals.
Away from home last season, they won ten of their eighteen games in the Swiss Super League, although their participation in European competitions was cut short.
Basel were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by PAOK Salonika in the Champions League before they played Apoel Limassol in the Europa League and they also felt short in the qualifying round here.
This isn’t like the Basel team of a few years ago who were able to be more competitive in Europe and we have no hesitation in backing the home side to enjoy a victory here.
