Cheltenham Gold Cup
Native River is a horse that was victorious in the 2018 Gold Cup and we’re happy to back this excellent stayer to land another victory in the blue riband race at the Cheltenham Festival.
The nine-year-old made the most of soft conditions to win twelve months ago and it appears likely that the horse will get the same sort of ground this year, with the rain expected to fall on Tuesday and provide plenty of cut in the turf.
Native River has ran twice this season, with the Colin Tizzard-trainer charge finishing a creditable third in the King George after a second-placed finish to Bristol de Mai in the Betfair Chase at Haydock.
It’s not that you can describe the horse as particularly classy, although he will be hard to pass on this undulating track and the runners are often found wanting when it comes to getting the trip.
We are happy to oppose Presenting Percy who won on soft ground at Gowran Park in January but is plenty short enough simply based on how well he performed when winning the RSA Chase at the Festival last year.
Meanwhile, Clan des Obeaux won the King George on Boxing Day, although the Kempton track is a million miles away from the Cheltenham one and an odds-on victory at Ascot is neither here or there.
We actually think Anibale Fly could run into a place if the conditions get tough, with the horse having run in last year’s Grand National, although Native River has course and distance and we’re happy to side with him over any other horse in the race.
