While Tottenham and Chelsea have been busy resting players in the earlier rounds of the EFL Cup, the competition has now reached the stage where Mauricio Pochettino and Maurizio Sarri will field their strongest possible teams as they attempt to reach the final.

Pochettino has never won silverware with Spurs despite being universally acclaimed by supporters, although perhaps this will be the season where the Argentine finally gets to hold a trophy aloft and his team were superior to their London rivals during a recent Premier League meeting.

A 3-1 victory was achieved thanks to a fast start to the match and we fancy Tottenham to claim another victory in this Wembley clash, with Spurs looking to establish a big first leg advantage before a trip to Stamford Bridge later in the month.

The first team should be nicely rested considering most of them were left out of the squad for Friday’s FA Cup trip to Tranmere, meaning that Harry Kane and company have had a full week of rest since winning 3-0 at Cardiff.

Indeed, the manner of that victory meant that Spurs were simply able to manage the match during the second half and they might be fresher than a Chelsea side who played Southampton a day later than their opponents before an FA Cup clash against Nottingham Forest.

It remains clear that the Blues rely too heavily on Eden Hazard to make things work in attack and they were left to hang on in a recent away win over Crystal Palace, with Olivier Giroud’s only Premier League goal of the season actually coming at Wembley against Spurs.

Chelsea were run ragged in that match and this is a game where Son Heung-Min will relish operating as part of a dynamic attack that also includes Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli playing behind Harry Kane.

The visitors will aim to keep things tight and perhaps a slender advantage would suit them ahead of the return leg, with Sarri just wanting to make sure that his team are still in the tie at the halfway stage.
