The History of the Premier League

The first Premier League season took place in 1992-3, with twenty-two clubs competing and it was Manchester United who claimed the inaugural title, with Sir Alex Ferguson about to establish a managerial legacy. The Red Devils claimed another title in 1993-4 although they were pipped to the hat-trick the following season.

Blackburn Rovers were able to claim the 1994-5 Premier League title thanks to the striking partnership of Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, with Kenny Dalglish’s side winning the title at Anfield despite losing the match 2-1 on the final day of the season.

Manchester United were to come storming back and win five of the next six renewals of the Premier League, although it’s notable that Arsenal were winners in 1997-8 and Arsene Wenger was starting to make his mark on English football, with the Frenchman one of the main figureheads in the history of the top flight.

The Gunners were to claim a further two Premier League titles in 2001-2 and 2003-4, with the former being a notable season as Arsenal were able to last the season without losing a game and were subsequently tagged as “The Invincibles”.

However, Chelsea were to enjoy a cash injection under owner Roman Abramovich and Premier League titles soon found their way to Stamford Bridge, with Jose Mourinho’s side winning consecutive top-flight tables in 2004-5 and 2005-6.

Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t in the mood to finish second for any longer and the Red Devils were inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo as they claimed three more titles between 2007-9, although Chelsea were victorious in 2010 under Carlo Ancelotti who was only to last a season at Stamford Bridge.

United were to win a further two titles under Ferguson, with successes coming in 2011 and 2013 before the Scot finally stepped down. In 2012, Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City had narrowly pipped their city rivals and there was to be enough success for the Citizens in 2013-14 under Manuel Pellegrini as Sergio Aguero scored that dramatic winner against QPR.

Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge reaped immediate dividends in 2015 as Chelsea won the Premier League title and it was an act repeated by Antonio Conte two years later as the Italian recovered from a bad start to win the 2017 title in his first season in English football.

However, it was Leicester City’s amazing 2015-16 season that will never be beaten. The Foxes famously started the season as 5000/1 shots to win the Premier League title, although Claudio Ranieri’s men kept winning matches and eventually won the title by a margin of ten points.

Our Premier League tipsters

We are a hard-working team at SportsGambler.com and have followed the Premier League from the very beginning, with our tipsters recommending a variety of pre-match and In-Play bets when it comes to the English top flight every week.

We aim to provide match selections that give readers a chance of making a long-term profit, with some of the following markets selected:

  • 1X2
  • Asian Handicap
  • Correct Score
  • Win to Nil
  • Half-Time / Full-Time
  • First Goalscorer
  • Anytime Goalscorer

We also recommend multiple bets such as the Daily Double and Daily Accumulator. The double consists of two selections which create attractive odds when multiplied together. The accumulator is more of a riskier selection but the larger odds means that customers only have to place small stakes to land potentially big returns.

Where you can bet on the English Premier League

Here at SportsGambler.com, we work closely with a small group of bookmakers that we trust and that also have good Premier League odds. You can claim a welcome bonus with each of these operators, with the bonus available in the form of making a first deposit or placing a first bet.

Bookmakers such as bet365, BetVictor /">BetVictor and Ladbrokes /">Ladbrokes create competitive prices on every Premier League match which means that customers have a good chance of beating the bookie and winning some money. There is particular value to be found placing bets on the Asian Handicap market where the bookmaker margin is particularly low.

We recommend you take your time before deciding where to place your Premier League bets, with each operator offering a wide range of markets although many customers like to bet on popular markets like 1X2, First Goalscorer and Over / Under 2.5 Goals.
