FIFA World Cup Betting Preview: Iran vs New Zealand

Iran and New Zealand meet in this FIFA World Cup Group G encounter at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium), with kick-off set for 21:00 on Monday 15 June.

Belgium and Egypt complete the lineup in Group G. Belgium are the clear favourites to top the group, while Egypt and Iran are expected to compete for the runners-up spot. New Zealand are viewed as the outsiders.

Back Iran to Beat New Zealand

Iran look a great bet to beat New Zealand on the Full-Time Result market. You can get odds of -120 for Team Melli to claim victory and that looks like excellent value.

Even though Iran's preparations have been far from ideal, with the team staying in Mexico and arriving late in Los Angeles ahead of the match, there still appears to be a significant gap in quality between the sides. Iran topped their AFC qualifying group ahead of Uzbekistan and are packed with experience, led by striker Mehdi Taremi.

New Zealand deserve credit for reaching the World Cup, but they qualified by beating modest opposition in Fiji and New Caledonia during the OFC campaign. Against a far stronger and more battle-tested Iranian side, the All Whites could find life much tougher.

New Zealand Beat New Caledonia to Qualify

Iran qualified directly for the 2026 World Cup by topping Group A in the third round of AFC qualifying. Team Melli finished two points clear of Uzbekistan, recording seven wins, two draws and one defeat from their 10 matches.

In their final qualifier, Iran secured a comfortable 3-0 home victory over North Korea. Iran signed off their World Cup preparations with consecutive victories in Antalya, Turkey, defeating Gambia 3-1 and Mali 2-0.

New Zealand qualified for the 2026 World Cup by winning the OFC qualifying tournament, securing Oceania's first-ever direct qualification spot. The All Whites were dominant throughout the finals, thrashing Fiji 7-0 in the semi-finals before beating New Caledonia 3-0 in the final to book their place at the tournament.

New Zealand have played four friendly matches in 2026, losing 2-0 to Finland before bouncing back with a 4-1 victory over Chile in March. In their final World Cup warm-up games in Florida, they beat Haiti 4-0 before suffering a 1-0 defeat to England.
